Life Out Loud: Joining Jesus Outside the Walls

Jesus is already alive and active in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and third places, waiting for His people to join Him. Smith urges believers to dismantle the sacred-secular divide and take their faith "out loud" into the common spaces of daily life. A reader learns to pay attention to the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit, adopt a posture of humble presence, and participate in God's redemptive work through ordinary hospitality, neighboring, and genuine friendship outside church walls.

Theme 02

Coming Soon

Action-Reflection Discipleship

Disciples are not formed by sitting in classrooms passively consuming information; they are forged through action in the field followed by deep, communal reflection. Drawing from experiential adult learning theory and Jesus' own training methods, Smith champions the Action-Reflection cycle as the bedrock of missional training. A reader learns to push past the paralysis of over-planning, take bold missional risks, and gather with mentors to appraise their experiences through the lens of Scripture.

Theme 03

Red Skies: Cultural Discernment and the Future Church

Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His day for being able to predict the weather by the sky while failing to discern the signs of the times (Matthew 16:2–3). In *Red Skies*, Smith gathers critical cultural conversations to help the church read the brewing storms of modern culture—secularization, technology, racial division, and institutional decline. A reader learns to shed panic and denial, practice prophetic lament, and cultivate an adaptive, hopeful imagination for the church's post-Christian future.

Theme 04

The Pando Rhizomatic Network

The largest living organism on earth is Pando—an ancient forest of 47,000 aspen trees in Utah connected by a single underground root system. Smith uses Pando as the master metaphor for the decentralized church: independent microchurches and missional outposts drawing life from a shared subterranean root network of Christ and His mission. A reader learns to abandon competitive institutional empire-building and cultivate interconnected, collaborative networks that thrive in cultural drought.

Theme 05

Coming Soon

Cultivating Missional Culture and Neighborhood Presence

Moving an established congregation into outward mission cannot happen through a six-week sermon series or a single outreach program; it requires patient, intentional cultural cultivation. Drawing on his work at Pulpit Rock Church, Smith teaches leaders how to cultivate shared language, sacred rituals, inspiring stories, and structural incentives that make neighboring second nature. A reader learns how to overcome congregational inertia and reshape a church's environment so that missional living becomes the default rhythm of every member.

The rhythm

How a formation works

1

Read the idea

Short readings and real cases open each week — the theology and the story behind the shift.

2

Practice the shift

Embodied practices and prompts move it off the page and into your actual week and neighborhood.

3

Debrief

Alone in a journal or together in a cohort — name what you saw God doing, then take the next small step.

Walking with a guide

What a cohort adds

The content is identical to the self-paced Pathway. What a cohort adds is people: a trained facilitator, a small group walking the same weeks, and the accountability of showing up together.

A trained facilitator guiding each session
A small group walking the same weeks with you
Live discussion, questions, and honest debrief
Accountability that keeps practice from drifting

Before you begin · FAQ

Questions about formation

The content is exactly the same. A Pathway is self-paced — you move through the readings and practices on your own schedule. A Cohort walks that same material with a trained facilitator and a small group on a shared weekly rhythm.

Start where the question is real

Not sure which formation is yours?

Start with the theme that names the question you are already carrying. Each formation walks that thread from idea into practice.
